If you are a great talent and have no passion, what you're playing will not have that special edge that makes some music great instead of just good. Music should always tell a story. Have you ever listened to someone read a story without reading it with any passion? Even if the story is a great story, the message is not as interesting as if that person told the story with more inflection and passion.
With music it is the same thing. We tell stories. Even if there is no vocals the listener will still hear and feel what you are playing. Music is about emotion. I would rather listen to a simple song played with feeling than a technical advanced piece that is played without any feeling. To me that type of music is sterile and impotent.
